Should You Write a New Year's Resolution?

By: Luz Vargas

When I started thinking about writing this article, I found out that I always had the idea to sit and to write my New Year’s resolution. The reason for not doing it? is the one than many of us have. No time. Usually this season of the year has been one of the busiest times for my business, adding to this, shopping for presents and celebrating can be overwhelming. By the time I was ready to sit and write I was already tired, I just wanted to relax, and the year to end! Does these sounds familiar to you?

While I was thinking about this topic I find out that in my mind I already made my resolutions during this present year without realizing it. What happens is that at the end of the year we have this special time to re-connect with oneselves and to think about  what we want to accomplish in our life’s. I think, the thought of writing a new year’s resolution is a good indication that we are going to take care of it sooner or later, because this desire stays in our subconscious and when the time is right we are going to come up with a resolution for everything we want to accomplish without thinking about it, It will come naturally because was written in our subconscious.

Some people like to write down their resolutions, I think this is the best way to keep things in perspective; this will help you to figure out where are you at, what you want and what steps you need to take to lead your life in the direction you want.

Here are some of the "basic" steps that will help you keep focused in to achieve your dreams for the next year. All that you need is to take the decision, be patience to see results, be enthusiastic. Ready?

1,- Be Realistic. Start with something small that you think you can accomplish in a few weeks, like reading that book you always wanted to read, finish that painting that is hanged in the wall, lose weight by eating more veggies and drink more water, exercise for at list 30:00 min every day for 4 weeks.

2. Make a "pro" and "con". list It may help to see a list of items on paper to keep your motivation strong. Develop this list over time, and ask others to contribute to it. Keep your list with you and refer to it when you need help keeping your resolve.

3. Track your Progress. Keep track of each small success you make toward reaching your larger goal. Short-term goals are easier to keep, and small accomplishments will help keep you motivated. Instead of focusing on losing 30 pounds, say, focus on losing that first 5. Keeping a food diary or a symptom journal may help you stay on track.

4. - Outline your plan. Decide how you will deal with the temptation to skip doing your resolution. This could include calling on a friend for help, practicing positive thinking and self-talk, or reminding yourself how good you will feel after achieving your dream.

5. - Talk about it. Don't keep your resolution a secret. Tell friends and family members who will be there to support your resolve to change yourself for the better or improve your health. Chances are that they will feel motivated by you and start doing the same thing as you. The best case scenario is to find yourself a buddy who shares your New Year's resolution and motivate each other.

6. – Reward yourself. This doesn't mean that you can eat an entire box of chocolates if your resolution is to diet. Instead, celebrate your success by treating yourself to something that you enjoy that does not contradict your resolution. If you've been sticking to your promise to eat better, for example, perhaps your reward could be going to a movie with a friend.

These are some of the basic steps that can help you to achieve your New Year’s resolution, remember to stick on it no matter what. Be patient, have a positive self talk. If your resolution has totally run out of steam by mid-February, don't despair. Start over again! There's no reason you can't make a "New Year's resolution" any time of year.

Make this coming year a special year for you by achieving the things you have been dreaming for so long. Good Luck! MZ
